SUMMARY:The Tandanya Adelaide Declaration and a discussion of ethical decisions around digital preservation
DESCRIPTION:14 Sep 2023 at 2-3 pm AEST\nQueensland State Archives\nGeneral\nBook Now\n\n\nThe 2019 Tandanya- Adelaide Declaration describes archives as “textual armouries” and calls on public archives to reimagine themselves as “an ethical space of encounter\, respect\, negotiation and collaboration”. The solution for breaking down the textual armouries is often thought to be digital technologies\, but the digital record has its own challenges with reciprocity and Indigenous data sovereignty. The questions of what to preserve and who should decide are as relevant for digital records as they are for textual records. This presentation will discuss how the Tandanya Declaration applies to digital preservation and how the ethics of digital preservation apply in Indigenous rights frameworks. \nHow should the digital preservation community address the ethical challenges arising from digital preservation and ensure that learnings are not only taken onboard but embedded within everyday practice? The session will consider a range of issues that challenge our approaches to collecting\, preserving and providing access to information\, from the de-colonialisation of archives\, to collecting the record of divisive cultural topics\, to environmental impact and the challenge of misinformation in the so-called post-truth world. \nThe speakers will provide their thoughts on the challenges faced by digital archivists before opening a conversation with the audience on how we not only facilitate change\, but how to verify that our preservation processes meet the demands of a 21st century digital archive. \nSpeakers\nDr Rose Barrowcliffe\, Butchulla-Wonamutta researcher and artist based on Gubbi Gubbi Country on the Sunshine Coast\, Queensland. Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, Macquarie University and First Nations Archives Advisor to the Queensland State Archives. \nPaul Wheatley\, Head of Research and Practice\, Digital Preservation Coalition. Paul has over 20 years’ experience in digital preservation\, including working on the seminal Cedars Project in the late 1990s\, leading the Digital Preservation team at the British Library\, and on the SPRUCE Project. \nThe session will conclude with a Q&A session with the audience and a panel including Dr Barrowcliffe\, Paul Wheatley and Josephine Marsh\, Acting State Archivist at the Queensland State Archives. \nRegistration\nRegistration is open to all. DESCRIPTION:The Digital Preservation Coalition (Aus) is hosting a series of ‘Just Keep the Bits’ workshops on risk management and digital preservation in Melbourne\, Canberra\, Sydney and Brisbane from 4 – 14 September 2023. \n\nGeneral\n\n\n\nJust keep the bits! A digital preservation workshop about risk management and digital preservation \nDigital preservation is a complex challenge with many different facets and so many things that can go wrong! How do you design an approach to digital preservation that will meet these challenges? Or if you’ve already embarked on your digital preservation journey\, how do you validate and fine tune what you’re already doing? In short\, how do you: “just keep the bits”? \nThis workshop will dig into the various threats our digital content faces\, from technical breakdown to cyber attack. It will introduce a simple risk assessment based approach to document\, analyse and offer routes to mitigate these risks\, breaking the challenge down into manageable and understandable components. The workshop will take a collaborative approach and will combine an initial presentation with plenary and group based discussions and exercises. \nThe workshop will give participants the chance to discuss and learn about the most challenging questions in digital preservation\, such as: how much digital preservation is enough or what’s an acceptable level of risk? SUMMARY:Heritage of the everyday: overlooked and undervalued?
DESCRIPTION:This Symposium will examine methods\, tools and approaches that engage with ‘everyday heritage’\, or the values associated with ordinary people and everyday life. It includes presentations and panel discussions on heritage and social value\, digital methods and heritage industry practice. The Symposium’s Keynote Speaker is Professor Sian Jones\, University of Stirling\, UK\, an interdisciplinary scholar with expertise in cultural heritage\, as well as on the role of the past in the production of power\, identity\, and sense of place.
