SUMMARY:18th International Digital Curation Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 18th edition of the International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC24) will take place in Edinburgh\, Scotland between 19-21 February 2024. \nThe main theme of IDCC this year will be Trust through Transparency taken from every vantage point of our communities. \nAbout the International Digital Curation Conference\nThe International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC) is an established annual event with a unique place in the digital curation community\, reaching out to individuals\, organisations and institutions across all disciplines and domains involved in curating data and providing an opportunity to get together with like-minded data practitioners to discuss policy and practice. \nTrust through Transparency\nOne of the (many) concerns of this age is the ability to trust information around us\, especially as we enter a new era of Artificial Intelligence\, where what you see cannot always be believed. \nTransparency is one way to promote trust\, by being clear about what we do\, and why we do it. This is true whether you are the researcher creating data\, the repository that curates that data\, or a reuser of the deposited data. \nOpen Science promotes transparency in how data are collected\, verified\, and used\, in order that we can trust findings built on them. \n

SUMMARY:Born Digital Heritage Now #BDCH23
DESCRIPTION:#BDCH23 Is the third iteration of the Born Digital Cultural Heritage conference series. The first and second iterations – in 2014 and 2022 – brought together academics and practitioners from across the world to consider issues in the field of born digital heritage\, from a range of disciplinary perspectives. A notable feature of this conference series has been the deliberate attempt to establish dialogue between those working in different professional fields. We recognise that born digital heritage reaches into all disciplines and that\, if we want to make progress on the challenges of preserving born digital heritage\, it takes people from a range of disciplines and professions working together. Therefore\, we seek to break down professional silos and other barriers that inhibit the discussion and sharing of questions\, knowledge and know how to address common challenges that we al face when researching\, preserving and accessing different forms of born digital cultural heritage. \n#BDCH23 will consider where born digital cultural heritage is at now. What are we making progress on and what are the urgent challenges? How are we going to safeguard our digital heritage for future generations?\nFor this event\, we aim to expand the fields of discussions to include architecture and design and extend the focus on digital games and media arts to include websites\, networking and other relevant domains. The challenges of preserving digital cultural heritage aren’t limited to legacy technologies\, of course\, but also affect contemporary platforms such as apps\, VR\, AR\, etc. \nRegistrations: \n#BDCH23 will be a hybrid conference held at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne and online via zoom. \n

SUMMARY:The Tandanya Adelaide Declaration and a discussion of ethical decisions around digital preservation
DESCRIPTION:14 Sep 2023 at 2-3 pm AEST\nQueensland State Archives\nGeneral\nBook Now\n\n\nThe 2019 Tandanya- Adelaide Declaration describes archives as “textual armouries” and calls on public archives to reimagine themselves as “an ethical space of encounter\, respect\, negotiation and collaboration”. The solution for breaking down the textual armouries is often thought to be digital technologies\, but the digital record has its own challenges with reciprocity and Indigenous data sovereignty. The questions of what to preserve and who should decide are as relevant for digital records as they are for textual records. This presentation will discuss how the Tandanya Declaration applies to digital preservation and how the ethics of digital preservation apply in Indigenous rights frameworks. \nHow should the digital preservation community address the ethical challenges arising from digital preservation and ensure that learnings are not only taken onboard but embedded within everyday practice? The session will consider a range of issues that challenge our approaches to collecting\, preserving and providing access to information\, from the de-colonialisation of archives\, to collecting the record of divisive cultural topics\, to environmental impact and the challenge of misinformation in the so-called post-truth world. \nThe speakers will provide their thoughts on the challenges faced by digital archivists before opening a conversation with the audience on how we not only facilitate change\, but how to verify that our preservation processes meet the demands of a 21st century digital archive. \nSpeakers\nDr Rose Barrowcliffe\, Butchulla-Wonamutta researcher and artist based on Gubbi Gubbi Country on the Sunshine Coast\, Queensland. Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, Macquarie University and First Nations Archives Advisor to the Queensland State Archives. \nPaul Wheatley\, Head of Research and Practice\, Digital Preservation Coalition. Paul has over 20 years’ experience in digital preservation\, including working on the seminal Cedars Project in the late 1990s\, leading the Digital Preservation team at the British Library\, and on the SPRUCE Project. \nThe session will conclude with a Q&A session with the audience and a panel including Dr Barrowcliffe\, Paul Wheatley and Josephine Marsh\, Acting State Archivist at the Queensland State Archives. \nRegistration\nRegistration is open to all. Places are strictly limited and should be booked in advance. Early booking is recommended as we expect this event will be popular. \nIf you have any questions about registration please contact Ellie O’Leary (eleanor.oleary@dpconline.org)or Robin Wright (robin.wright@dpconline.org). \nDPC Inclusion & Diversity Policy\nThe DPC Community is guided by the values set out in our Strategic Plan and aims to be respectful\, welcoming\, inclusive and transparent. We encourage diversity in all its forms and are committed to being accessible to everyone who wishes to engage with the topic of digital preservation\, whilst remaining technology and vendor neutral. We ask all those who are part of this community to be positive\, accepting\, and sensitive to the needs and feelings of others in alignment with our DPC Inclusion & Diversity Policy. \n\n\nVenue Location: Diamantina Room\, Queensland State Archives\, 435 Compton Road\, Runcorn\, Queensland\nBOOK NOW\n\n\n\n\nEvent Location: Queensland State Archives\n\n435 Compton Road\nRuncorn\nQueensland\nQLD 4113\nAustralia

SUMMARY:'Just Keep the Bits' workshops - risk management and digital preservation (Melbourne\, Canberra\, Sydney\, Brisbane)
DESCRIPTION:The Digital Preservation Coalition (Aus) is hosting a series of ‘Just Keep the Bits’ workshops on risk management and digital preservation in Melbourne\, Canberra\, Sydney and Brisbane from 4 – 14 September 2023. \n\nGeneral\n\n\n\nJust keep the bits! A digital preservation workshop about risk management and digital preservation \nDigital preservation is a complex challenge with many different facets and so many things that can go wrong! How do you design an approach to digital preservation that will meet these challenges? Or if you’ve already embarked on your digital preservation journey\, how do you validate and fine tune what you’re already doing? In short\, how do you: “just keep the bits”? \nThis workshop will dig into the various threats our digital content faces\, from technical breakdown to cyber attack. It will introduce a simple risk assessment based approach to document\, analyse and offer routes to mitigate these risks\, breaking the challenge down into manageable and understandable components. The workshop will take a collaborative approach and will combine an initial presentation with plenary and group based discussions and exercises. \nThe workshop will give participants the chance to discuss and learn about the most challenging questions in digital preservation\, such as: how much digital preservation is enough or what’s an acceptable level of risk? There are no right or wrong answers\, but this workshop will help the participants begin to find appropriate answers for their own organizational contexts and to learn in a friendly and collaborative environment. \nPlease see below for links to the event pages in the relevant cities: \nJust Keep the Bits Workshop – Melbourne – Digital Preservation Coalition (dpconline.org) \n\n\nJust Keep the Bits Workshop – Canberra – Digital Preservation Coalition (dpconline.org) \nJust Keep the Bits Workshop – Sydney – Digital Preservation Coalition (dpconline.org) \nJust Keep the Bits Workshop – Brisbane – Digital Preservation Coalition (dpconline.org) \nAgenda\n\nStoring bits and mitigating hits – presentation by Paul Wheatley\, Head of Research and Practice at the Digital Preservation Coalition (40mins)\nRisk and mitigation – plenary exercise (20mins)\nBreak (10mins)\nRisk assess a digital archive – small groups activity (40mins)\nReporting back and discussion (30mins)\nWrap up\, feedback and final thoughts (10mins)\n\nRegistration\nPlaces are strictly limited and should be booked in advance. SUMMARY:ICOMOS 21st General Assembly and Scientific Symposium
DESCRIPTION:ICOMOS (the International Council on Monuments and Sites) is a global organisation of cultural heritage professionals\, which serves as the principal advisory body on cultural heritage to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee and works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places. DESCRIPTION:This event will take place at 14:00 AEST / 12:00 SGT\, AWST / 16:00 NZST (click here for your local time). \n#DPClinic Aus is an informal online space to discuss a popular digital preservation topic. \nJoin local Australasian DPC members for a community conversation about Digital Preservation and issues that arise when using the ‘Cloud’. There may not be clear solutions\, but this will be an important discussion in a rapidly evolving area. \n#DPConnect and #DPClinic are available to everyone in the digital preservation community\, DPC Members and non-members alike\, provided all participants are respectful and supportive of one another and adhere to the DPC’s Inclusion and Diversity Policy. \n\n\nBOOK NOW
