The ever-inspiring Wider Local Studies Seminar is back for 2025, with a jam-packed online program spanning three days – 10, 11, and 12 June. It’s the perfect opportunity to connect with public library colleagues across Australia, share innovative practices, and reflect on the evolving landscape of local studies.

This year’s theme leans into inclusion, collaboration, and legacy—featuring standout presentations from both international and Australian colleagues.

Here’s a taste of what to expect:

Day 1 – Tuesday 10 June: Local Studies and Inclusion

  • Keynote speakers Abby Hoverstock and Laura Ruttum Senturia from Denver Public Library will kick off the seminar with a compelling session on their diversity audit of special collections—a must-see for anyone rethinking inclusive practices in local studies.

  • Ellen Forsyth (State Library of NSW) on deliberate practices of inclusion (or collection silences)

  • Popular 10-minute lightning talks covering everything from plaques and markers to TV history and hands-on heritage workshops including Teishan Ahearn (Merri-bek Libraries) History From the Bottom Up on the Queer Histories/Queer Futures project.

Day 2 – Wednesday 11 June: Oral History & Digital Preservation

Key sessions include:

  • Maria Savvidis (State Library of NSW) on managing legacy oral histories when there’s no paperwork,

  • Matthew Burgess (Australasia Preserves) sharing free resources and training from the Digital Preservation Coalition.

Plus: More 10-minute talks on First Nations oral histories, Flickr accessibility projects, Margery C Ramsay scholarship recipient Mia Peardon‘s (City of Ballarat) uncovering hidden collections project.

Day 3 – Thursday 12 June: Discussion Session

An informal, interactive session (unrecorded) designed for peer exchange and reflection. Bring your questions, ideas, and webcam—this is where the magic happens. We’ll be diving into insights from the previous days and brainstorming future directions.
